With the ability to open our doors and operate our business nowhere in sight, we have decided to close down Holy City Magic. First and foremost, I want to thank all of our fans, customers, vendors and guest performers for your support for our business over the last year. In such a short time, we took a unique concept and turned it into a thriving, fun experience that USA Today called, “Charleston’s hot new ticket.” We are proud to say that while we were open, most of our shows were either sold out or extremely full. To our employees… during the past year, we have become a family and had more laughs than I can count, and to one of the best landlords a business could have, thank you for your support during these trying times!
Let me be clear, we are not closing because of COVID-19, we are closing because of government bureaucracy and the disproportionate way the law is being enforced. Bars across the state can host live entertainment. Our performers can literally walk across the street and perform their shows, but not in our facility. Thousands of people can march together in protest, but we must remain closed. Bars at the beach can host full concerts, yet our 50-seat theater and bar cannot operate. You can even rent dirty bowling shoes at a bowling alley, but cannot sit in a sanitized theater seat. Public and employee safety is extremely important to us and we do not take this lightly. Unlike bars, we were in a unique position to operate at half capacity, with masks and insure customers were properly socially distanced with ticket sales and seat placement. Unfortunately, we were not allowed to do that. We just wanted the same opportunity other similar businesses were given.
While we are closing, our journey may not be over. Once things get back to normal, and we are hopeful that it will, we will do everything in our power to bring Holy City Magic back to the Lowcountry. Until then, thank you for your continued support for our theater and live entertainment.
